Harbor Notes

A small notebook about tides, knots and quiet mornings on the water.

The bowline, again

It is the first knot everyone learns and the one worth tying with cold hands. It holds under load and comes undone when the load is gone.

Rule of twelfths

The water does not rise evenly. In six hours it moves one, two, three, three, two and one twelfths of its range, so the middle hours are the busy ones.

Reading the morning sky

High thin cloud thickening from the west usually means the wind will change within a day. It is an old rule, and still a useful one.
